Delta-8-THC and Delta-9-THC are chemically very similar. Both have almost the same structure and differ in only one small position (PMC10976172). Nevertheless, Delta-8-THC has a weaker effect than Delta-9-THC. The reason for this is that Delta-8 binds less strongly to the CB1 receptors in the brain (Tagen & Klumpers, 2022, British Journal of Pharmacology 179(15):3915–3933). That's why the high is often described as milder and more relaxed (Kruger & Kruger, 2022).
| Delta-9-THC | Delta-8-THC | |
|---|---|---|
| Effect | Stronger high | Milder high |
| Potency | Reference (100%) | About 65–75% as strong (Kruger & Kruger, 2022; PMC10976172) |
| Typical effects | Strong euphoria, relaxation, sometimes anxiety or paranoia at high doses | Similar effects, but usually gentler and less frequent anxiety or paranoia (Kruger & Kruger, 2022) |
| Legal status in the EU (July 2026) | Banned or strictly regulated in most countries. In Germany, cannabis is permitted for adults under certain conditions. | Legal status is unclear. Some countries have already banned Delta-8 (EUDA). |
| Price | Often more expensive, as it's more strictly regulated | Frequently cheaper |
Since laws change quickly, you should always check the current regulations in your country before buying.
Delta 8 vs. Delta 9: Comparing the Effects
Both substances act on the same receptors in the body. That's why they have similar effects:
- Euphoria
- Afslapning
- Altered sense of time
- Increased appetite
The biggest difference is intensity.
Delta-9 usually produces a stronger high. At higher doses, side effects such as anxiety or paranoia can also occur (Kruger & Kruger, 2022).
Many users describe Delta-8 as more pleasant. In surveys, most reported experiencing anxiety or paranoid thoughts far less often than with Delta-9 (Kruger & Kruger, 2022).
Nevertheless, Delta-8 is not risk-free. Side effects have also been reported with Delta-8, including:
- Hallucinations
- Tremors
- Nausea and vomiting
- Confusion
- Loss of consciousness
